There are several interesting and picturesque villages within an easy drive of Gite Gare du Nord, including Hautefort with its magnificent chateau and Sorges, the Truffle hunting capital of France with an interesting museum – a ‘must visit’ for gourmets.
Further afield are many attractive and historic places, including the historic towns of Périgeux (35km) and mediaeval Sarlat-le-Canéda (70km) featuring restaurants where you can taste the local specialties of the famous ‘Cuisine Périgourdine’…
The Périgord region has a rich history with stunning medieval villages nestled in the Dordogne Valley and remarkable prehistoric caves such as Lascaux and its world-famous cave drawings. Limoges (71km) is famed for its porcelain production, and you can visit and make purchases at several factory outlets there.

Famed for its domed Saint-Front Cathedral and the Vesunna Gallo-Roman Museum containing excavated Roman house with the remains of baths and murals.
The impressive formations of the caves in the nearby village Tourtoirac, are known as ‘The geological Pearl of the Perigord’.

Available on the Dordogne and Auvézère rivers, this is a great (potentially all day) family adventure. Canoeing on the Dordogne river takes you through a host of stunningly picturesque and historic locations where you can pause for a picnic and admire the view from the riverbank.
